BRONX, N.Y. – Sarah Prezioso and Ali Robinson both belted two homeruns and collected three RBI a piece as the Temple softball team defeated Fordham, 7-4, in the opening game of a twinbill at Fordham on Saturday, April 2. The Owls dropped the nightcap, 6-4.
In game one, Fordham jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and another three in the bottom of the third. The Rams' run in the first came off a leadoff home run from Jocelyn Dearborn. The host team took advantage of four hits, including two doubles, and a Temple error to get its three in the third.
The Owls cut it to 4-1 with a Robinson solo shot to center field in the top of the fourth. That score would remain until the top of the sixth when the Temple bats came alive. The Cherry and White proceeded to record seven of their nine hits in the final two frames on the way to the come-from-behind win.
Prezioso led off the sixth with a solo homerun to right center field, chasing Fordham starting pitcher Chelsea Plimpton. Reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week Jen Mineau came on in relief, but didn't fare much better, giving up three more hits in the inning, including an RBI single to Meaghan Marley.
Trailing 4-3 entering the top of the seventh, Temple used a two-out rally to take the lead for good. Kristen Marris singled with one out, and Samantha Schoell sacrificed her to second for the second out. Prezioso followed with her second homerun of the game, plating herself and Marris for Temple's first lead, 5-4. Stephanie Pasquale kept the inning alive, reaching on an error, and Robinson stepped in and belted her second homerun of the game to put TU up 7-4.
Marris sat the Rams down in order in the bottom of the frame to preserve the win for Temple. The righthander went all 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits while striking out eight and walking none.
The nightcap began much the same as the opener. The Owls went down in order in the top of the first, and Dearborn gave Fordham a quick lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame. After a walk put Nicole Callahan on, and a foul out to left field advanced her to second, Gabby Luety drove her in with a double to left center field. One out later, Beckah Wiggins doubled to right center to bring Luety around to score for the 3-0 advantage.
TU came right back to go ahead 4-3 with four runs of its own in the top of the second. Pasquale led off with a single, followed by a Robinson walk. A fielder's choice gave Temple one out with runners on the corners and Devynne Nelons delivered with a single to third base to plate Pasquale. One out later, Christina Sykora put Temple ahead with a three-run home run to left field.
That score would remain until the fourth when Jessica Crowley led off the frame with a double and Palumbo drove her in with a two-run homer to put the hosts ahead again, 5-4. The Rams added one more in the inning for a 6-4 cushion that would last for the remainder of the contest.
Brooklin White took the loss on the mound for Temple, giving up nine hits, striking out five and walking three. Sykora was one of six Owls' players with a hit in the contest as the squad chased starter Mineau after four innings and four hits. Plimpton came on in relief, giving up two hits in three innings of work.
Temple is 14-18 overall and 5-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The Owls travel to George Washington for a doubleheader with the Colonials on Sunday, April 3, beginning at 12 p.m.
