Owls open postseason with NIWFA Championships on Saturday
PHILADELPHIA - Another regular season of Temple women's fencing has passed, with the Owls now geared up for the always exciting postseason competition. Opening the season ranked ninth in the polls and climbing to seventh in the latest release, Temple put together an impressive dual-meet record of 24-7 which featured several memorable upsets.
The Owls, under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Nikki Franke, most recently hosted the Temple Invitational on February 28. Going 2-2 in a meet that featured all top 10 teams, the Owls honored four seniors - Audrey Barroso, Alyssa Lombardi, Samantha Pascarelli and Grace Wu - who helped the team reach exciting heights in their careers.
Each weapon has an individual with over 40 wins, with junior Kamali Thompson leading the way with an astounding record of 55-7 in sabre. A trio of foilists have broken the 40 win mark as well. Sophomore Mikayla Varadi owns a record of 45-13, freshman Epiphany Georges a record of 43-13, and junior Alyssa Lomuscio at 43-13. In epee, freshman Chantal Montrose leads the way with a mark of 44-28, while Wu is close behind wtih a record of 43-28 and Lombardi is 44-38.
Temple has been impressive against some of the top teams in the nation. An upset of #4 St. John's and a win over #9 Duke highlighted the Temple Invitational, while upsets of then #2 Penn State and #8 Penn at the Penn State Multi-Meet (1/30) where just as extraordinary.
First up on the path through the postseason is a meet the Owls have been traditionally dominant in - the NIWFA Championships hosted by Johns Hopkins University. Temple has won 14 consecutive NIWFA titles and is poised to extend that streak this Saturday, March 5. Next for the Cherry and White will be the always competitive NCAA Regionals, where the Owls hope to qualify the maximum of six fencers for the NCAA Championships on March 24-27.
