Remillard rips first career homer to help Owls avoid shutout

Box Score

ELON, N.C.
- Senior Ben White kept the Owls within striking distance allowing just five runs over the first six innings, but a late rally from West Virginia left Temple with a 12-1 loss, Saturday morning at Latham Park.  Temple drops to 3-4 on the year while the Mountaineers improve to 3-5.

White (1-2) kept the Mountaineers scoreless over the first two innings, allowing one run in the third, fifth and sixth before being pulled with one out in the seventh.  The Parkesburg, Pa., native fanned just two batters in the start and gave up 10 hits.

Junior Jimmy Devine came on in relief for White, securing the final two outs of the seventh but allowing two runs credited to White and a pair to himself.  Freshman Zach Batchelor and junior Tyler Horst combined to throw the eighth, while freshman Phil Gianakos threw a scoreless ninth.

Senior Andy Berry (1-1) started and went eight innings to earn the win for West Virginia.  Berry struck out three and allowed six hits and one run.

Down 1-0 after WVU picked up one in the third, Temple was poised to strike in the bottom of the fifth.  Junior Taylor Juran led off the frame with a single through the right side, but was caught stealing after a strikeout to junior Cameron Green.  The double play did not halt the Owls' momentum, as freshman Will Remillard and junior Jabair Khan ripped back-to-back singles to spark a two-out rally.  WVU's Berry snuck out of the jam forcing senior Byron McKoy to fly out in foul territory.

The Mountaineers picked up one more in the top of the fifth and sixth, with a four-run seventh providing ample separation for a 7-0 lead.

Temple got on the board with two outs in the seventh, as Remilliard cracked his first career home run to left field.  It would be the only runs of the game for Temple however, with West Virginia adding five more in the eighth to put the final score at 12-1.

Remillard, starting at catcher, led the Owls going two-for-three with one RBI.  Khan also went two-for-three, while senior Ryan Ferguson (1-2, 1B) extended his hit streak to seven games with a single in the sixth.

The Diamond Owls wrap up their trip to North Carolina with a contest against Elon at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.
