LOWELL, Mass. – Despite a furious comeback attempt that cut a 20-point deficit down to five, the second-seeded Temple women's basketball team was ultimately upset by sixth-seeded Dayton (21-10) in the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals by a score of 75-67. The Owls (23-8) must now wait until the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, March 14 to determine their postseason fate.
Kristen McCarthy scored a game-high 18 points for Temple with 13 of those coming in the Owls' second-half run. Qwedia Wallace scored 17 points while Shey Peddy and Natasha Thames added 11 points apiece.
Dayton's Kristin Daugherty led her team with 16 points and Justine Raterman scored 15. Temple won the regular-season match-up with the Flyers, 76-52, when Dayton was without the services of Raterman due to a concussion.
Temple led 4-0 and still held a four-point lead at 12-8, but a 12-4 Dayton run put the Flyers on top at the midway point of the first half.
The half saw five ties, the last at 24-24 near the five-minute mark before Dayton went on to lead the rest of the way. Raterman led all players with 12 points in the half including 5-of-5 at the line, and helped the Flyers lead by as many as six on two occasions.
Temple got some big offensive rebounds that led to 10 second-chance points to the Flyers' two, but the Owls were scoreless from behind the arc and committed 10 first-half turnovers as Dayton took a 38-32 lead into halftime.
After Dayton started the second half by increasing its lead to eight, Temple scored on consecutive possessions to cut the margin to four, but the Flyers then exploded for an 8-0 run to lead by 12, 48-36 with 15 minutes left.
Dayton increased its lead to 20, 58-38 as the Owls went 2-of-13 from the field in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Temple started more aggressively attacking the basket, leading to a 13-3 run over the next four minutes as the Owls cut the 20-point deficit down to 10.
McCarthy drove through traffic for a layup with just over four minutes left to cut the margin to eight, 53-61, and the Owls kept Dayton scoreless for over five minutes.
