Owls win two of three doubles, all three singles

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
The Temple men's tennis team hosted NJIT on Sunday, April 10, at the TU Pavilion in non-conference action. The Owls defeated the Highlanders easily, winning 7-0.

Junior Filip Rams and freshman Taylor Hairston opened doubles play with an 8-4 win at number one over Petr Rousar and Joao Tasca. NJIT made it interesting by winning at number three, but juniors Dmitry Vizhunov and Stanislav Stekolshikov wrapped up the point for TU with a 9-7 win at number two.

In singles play, the Cherry and White won every singles match, with five of the six decisions coming in straight sets. Filip Rams again got things rolling with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rousar at number one. Vizhunov followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the third flight against Ike Kiro, and Hairston secured the win with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 decision at number four.

Although the match was decided, play continued on the second, fifth and sixth courts. Stekolshikov had the most challenge from NJIT, taking Tasca to three sets at number two but ultimately prevailing, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8. At fifth singles, junior Mansur Gishkaev got by Dan Salomon, 6-1, 6-2, and classmate Andrey Morozov rounded out the scoring with a 6-3, 6-4 decision at number six.

Temple is 16-6 overall and will close out the regular season with two matches this week, before heading to Saint Louis for the Atlantic 10 Championship on April 15-17. The Owls travel to UMBC for a 1 p.m. match on Monday, April 11, before hosting Villanova on Wednesday, April 13 at 12:30 p.m.
