PHILADELPHIA – Temple's second half comeback fell short against a strong Richmond lacrosse team, as the Owls (4-9, 2-2) lost by a score of 13-9 to the Spiders (7-7, 4-0) on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Jaymie Tabor led the Owls with a hat trick on the afternoon, the first of her career.
Julianna Nicola, Caitlin Fifield and Hayley Ross all scored three goals apiece to lead Richmond, with Nicola adding three assists.
Richmond goalkeeper Victoria Roebuck and Temple keeper Tess Bishop each made nine saves in the game, but the Spiders out-shot the Owls, 31-22.
Temple fell in an early hole as Fifield and Ross scored within the first minute to put Richmond up 2-0. The Owls got goals from Stephanie Markunas, Swavola and Tabor within the first 12 minutes to keep pace, and Temple trailed just 4-3 at 18:55.
The rest of the first half was all Richmond, as Nicola scored twice and four of her teammates scored once in a 6-0 Richmond run to end the half.
Temple cut the seven-goal deficit to as few as four halfway through the second half, but it was as close as the Owls would get.
Shelby Christopher, Missy Schweitzer and Tabor all scored in a 3-0 run over a three-minute span midway through the half, with the first two of those coming on free position opportunities. Tabor and Karly Cohen each tallied a goal in the final 10 minutes as Temple out-scored Richmond 6-3 in the half.
The Owls will play two of their final three A-10 games on the road, starting with a 4:00 p.m. contest at Duquesne on Friday, April 15.
