PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Despite having not played in nearly two weeks, Temple softball pitcher Kristen Marris didn't seem to miss a beat, tossing two complete-game gems while defeating La Salle twice on Friday, April 15. The squad provided Marris with plenty of offense in a 7-0 first game win, and a 5-0 nightcap victory.
It did take a while for the Owls to dust the cobwebs off after having four-straight doubleheaders canceled since last playing on April 3. It was a 0-0 game through the first four innings, with just three hits between the two teams. TU opened it up in the fifth, however, scoring five runs on three hits, including a grand slam off the bat of freshman Stephanie Pasquale.
That score stood until the top of the seventh, when the Cherry and White added two insurance runs. After a double from junior Samantha Schoell, freshman Sarah Prezioso switched places with her with her own double to put one run across. Prezioso ultimately scored on a passed ball to round out the scoring.
Marris allowed just one hit in the contest, a single to Liz Reed in the third inning. She walked one and struck out five. Prezioso and Pasquale each recorded two hits in the contest, with Prezioso driving in two runs and Pasquale registering four RBI.
In the nightcap, Temple got on the board a little earlier than game one, plating a run in the top of the second. Sophomore Ali Robinson and junior Meaghan Marley both drew walks before junior Christina Sykora singled to center field to drive in Robinson.
That score would remain until a three-run fifth gave the Owls some breathing room. Pasquale struck again, this time delivering a two-run shot over the left field fence to make it a 3-0 game. Temple scored again in the frame when junior Rachel Knable drove in Robinson with a double, making it 4-0.
TU added one more in the top of the seventh when Pasquale led off the inning with a double, and scored on a Robinson single to center field.
Marris went the distance again on the mound, allowing just two hits and fanning eight with one walk. Pasquale again registered two hits in the contest, while Robinson and Knable each had a pair of hits.
Temple is 18-18 overall and 9-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The squad is back in action on Tuesday, April 19, when it travels to Villanova for a 3 p.m. doubleheader with the Wildcats.
