Softball Uses Nine Run Seventh Inning To Take Game at Saint Louis, 9-1

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Temple softball team scored nine runs in the top of the final inning to post a come-from-behind 9-1 win over Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 action on Thursday, April 21. The Owls improve to 19-18 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
It was a 0-0 game through the first four and a half innings, before the host team Billikens plated a run in the bottom of the fifth. Saint Louis loaded the bases with a single and two walks, and with two outs, TU pitcher Kristen Marris lost control for a moment and hit pinch hitter Kelly Flanagan to bring in the run.
The 1-0 score would remain until the Cherry and White exploded for nine runs in the top of the seventh. Freshman Stephanie Pasquale opened the inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore Ali Robinson followed with a double to right field, chasing starting pitcher Kelcie Matesa. Hannah Huebbe came on in relief and walked junior Rachel Knable to load the bases. One out later, junior Meaghan Marley drew another walk to force a run in, knotting the game at 1-1.
Junior Christina Sykora's fielder's choice brought in another run before Marris singled to right field to drive in Knable. With the bases still loaded and one out, junior Samantha Schoell was hit by a pitch, making it 4-1 and chasing Huebbe. Matesa reentered the game, and the Owls quickly scored again on a passed ball.
With the game now at 6-1 in Temple's favor, Matesa did get freshman Sarah Prezioso to strike out looking, but Pasquale stepped in an delivered her second hit of the inning, a single to left field that scored Schoell and Marris. After Robinson drew a walk, Knable reached on a fielding error and Pasquale came around to score the final run for the Owls.
Saint Louis threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Laura Bohning sent a two-out double down the left field line, but Marris got Jessica Van Nostrand to fould out to third base to get the win.
Marris threw all seven innings for the Owls, giving up just two hits and one run.
Temple is back in action tomorrow for another single-game against Saint Louis, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
