Head Coach Tonya Cardoza takes Coach of the Year honors; Shey Peddy Named Player of the Year

PHILADELPHIA – For a second straight year, the Temple women's basketball team earned the two highest honors given at the annual Philadelphia Big 5 Awards Banquet, and the team claimed the 2011 City Series Trophy. Third-year head coach Tonya Cardoza earned her third straight Big 5 Coach of the Year Award, while junior Shey Peddy was named the Big 5 Player of the Year. The banquet was held April 19 at Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill, Pa.

The Owls were the outright champion of the Big 5 this year after a second-place finish a year ago. Temple was 4-0 against its city rivals and 24-9 overall this year- the best overall record in the Big 5.

The Owls also earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth straight year. The Owls were the only Big 5 team represented in the postseason, and made the most of it by advancing to the NCAA Second Round after a 63-45 win vs. Arizona State. The 10th-seeded Owls then lost to eventual national runner-up Notre Dame in the NCAA Second Round.

Peddy along with senior Qwedia Wallace and junior Kristen McCarthy were all named to the Big 5 First Team, along with Penn's Alyssa Baron and La Salle's Ashley Gale.

Temple senior Marli Bennett was one of five honorees to the Big 5 All-Academic Team.

Peddy was the team's leader with 14.1 points per game, 4.2 assists per game and 3.2 steals per game. Impressively, she also ranked second with 5.1 rebounds per game. Peddy was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team and All-Defensive Team, while McCarthy earned A-10 Second Team honors and Wallace was named to the A-10 Third Team.

Peddy, McCarthy and Wallace all surpassed the 1,000-point scoring mark in their careers during the course of the season. Wallace set the program's career record for three-pointers with 162, and Peddy set the single-season record for steals with 104.
