AMBLER, Pa. –
The Temple softball team returned home for the first time since March, but it wasn't the homecoming the squad was hoping for. After dropping a heartbreaking 11 inning game, 5-4, in the opener, the Owls fell 12-4 in the nightcap against Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's on Tuesday, April 26.

It was looking like the visiting Hawks were going to walk away easily with the first game. SJU held a 4-0 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth, but that all changed in that half of the frame. The Cherry and White rallied with two outs to score four runs on five hits and tie the game. The big blow in the inning came from the bat of junior Rachel Knable, who hit a two-run double down the right field line.

The 4-4 score would remain until the top of the 11th inning, when Saint Joseph's finally broke the deadlock. Rochelle Christman opened the inning with a double down the left field line, and one out later, Dana Bieniek doubled to centerfield to plate Christman.

Sophomore Kayla Cook hit a one-out single to right field in the bottom of the 11th to give Temple hope, but relief pitcher Taryn Ashway shut down the final two batters to come away with the win.

Senior Kristen Marris (14-9) was the tough-luck loser, pitching all 11.0 innings, allowing 14 hits and striking out eight. Ashway (4-6) pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and fanning two. Erin Gallagher was the starter for the Hawks, going 8.0 innings, giving up 10 hits, and striking out 11. Freshman Stephanie Pasquale and sophomore Ali Robinson were both 3-for-5 with one RBI in the contest.

It looked like things would go differently for the Owls in the nightcap when freshman Sarah Prezioso staked her team to a 1-0 lead with a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second for both teams, however, Saint Joseph's went on to score four in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth, while allowing just one more from TU during that time, to jump out to an 11-2 advantage.

Temple avoided a run-rule shortened end with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the deficit was too much to overcome. SJU tacked on another run in the top of the seventh to make the final score 12-4.

Gallagher (21-7) got the win for the Hawks, pitching the final 5.0 innings, giving up four hits and two runs, and striking out four. Freshman Brooklin White (5-9) took the loss, going 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and four runs. Junior Christina Sykora was 3-fpr-3 in the game with a double.

Temple is 20-20 overall and 11-5 in the Atlantic 10. The Owls are back in action on Thursday, April 28, when they host Coppin State in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Saint Joseph's improves to 27-13, 9-3 A-10.
