OLEAN, N.Y. – In its final conference action of the regular-season, the Temple softball team split a pair of games at St. Bonaventure on Sunday, May 1, 2011. The Owls fell 4-3 in the opener of the Atlantic 10 doubleheader, before taking the nightcap by a 6-3 count.
In game one, TU got on the board first with two runs in the top of the opening inning. Junior Samantha Schoell sent a one-out shot over the left field fence to give her squad the early 1-0 lead. One out later, freshman Stephanie Pasquale doubled to left field. After a walk by sophomore Ali Robinson put runners on first and second, junior Rachel Knable singled to center field to plate Pasquale.
The Bonnies got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second, tied it up with one in the fourth, and then went ahead 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Owls knotted the score again with a run in the top of the seventh. Freshman Sarah Prezioso belted her team-leading seventh homerun of the season over the left center field fence to make it a 3-3 game.
Ashley Snider led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to center field, but it looked like Temple pitcher Kristen Marris might get out of the jam and send the game to extra innings when she struck out the next two batters. Jessenia Andujar had other plans, however, as she singled up the middle to bring Snider around for the winning run.
Marris took the loss, going 6.2 innings, allowing nine hits, walking five and striking out five. Prezioso and Pasquale had two hits apiece for TU.
The nightcap started out as a pitcher's duel as the teams combined for three hits through the first three innings. It was Temple breaking through first with a run in the top of the fourth, this time a solo shot down the left field line off the bat of junior Christina Sykora. The Owls added two more in the top of the sixth. Robinson and sophomore Kayla Cook each had RBI singles in the frame.
St. Bonaventure made it interesting, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to three hits and two errors in the inning. With the game tied at 3-3, it would again come down to the final inning.
Junior Melissa Robbins was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Schoell drew a walk to put two runners on, and Prezioso stepped in and belted her second homerun of the day to stake the Owls to a 6-3 lead. SBU threatened in the bottom of the frame, putting two runners on, but Marris got a strikeout and ground out to end the game and preserve the win.
Marris (15-10) went the distance, allowing six hits and fanning 10. Prezioso had another solid game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI.
Temple is 21-21 overall and 12-6 in Atlantic 10 play. The Cherry and White wrap up the regular-season with a pair of games at Army on Wednesday, May 4, beginning at 3:30 p.m., before heading to the A-10 tournament in Charlotte, N.C. May 11-14, 2011.
