Owls rally to tie game in sixth, lose on walk-off

CAMDEN, N.J. - Junior Jabair Khan drove in all three of the the Temple baseball team's runs including a pair in the sixth to tie the game, but Saint Joseph's plated the deciding run in the ninth to take a 4-3 win over the Owls in a Liberty Bell Classic game at Campbell's Field on Wednesday night. Temple is now 15-11 on the year, while Saint Joseph's moves to 11-17.
Junior Tyler Horst made it through four innings before being relieved by freshman Zach Batchelor. Horst scattered four hits and gave up just two runs in the start, earning no decision. Batchelor let up one run over two frames, also allowing six hits. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic threw the remainder of the game, holding the Hawks scoreless over the seventh and eight, but allowing the winning run in the ninth to take the loss.
Khan was one of two Owls to record two hits on the evening, as the normally potent Owls offense was held to three runs and eight hits. Freshman Will Remillard, designated hitter for the evening, was two-for-four with a run scored, while senior Ryan Ferguson, making the start at catcher, went one-for-four with a double.
Freshman Jordan Carter started for Saint Joseph's and put in four innings of work, holding Temple to one run and three hits. Three more Hawks were called in before Daniel Thorpe threw a scoreless eighth to card the win.
Temple took the first lead of the game by securing a run in the top of the second. Remillard ripped a one-out infield single to start things off, moving to second on a single by sophomore Daniel Dragos. Khan stepped in and singled into left center to plate Remillard and give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks were quick to respond with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game, and came up with another run in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. After Horst threw a scoreless fourth, Saint Joseph's went up two with another score in the bottom of the fifth off of Batchelor.
The Owls would not stay down for long, rallying to tie the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Ferguson got things going with a one-out double to left center, with a walk to Nikorak putting runners on first and second. Remillard, as the next batter, singled to left center to load the bases. Khan came up clutch with two-outs, hitting an infield single to plate Nikorak and Ferguson.
Batchelor fired a scoreless sixth, giving Temple a chance to take a lead in the top of the seventh. Junior Cameron Green led off the frame with a single to left, forcing a pitching change for Saint Joseph's. The switch worked out for the Hawks, as freshman Matt Buccheri forced a pair of flyouts and a strikeout to strand two Owls.
The Owls' went down in order in the eighth, and were poised for a two-out rally in the ninth that was spoiled by a pick off at first. Saint Joseph's came up with the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth, walking-off with a 4-3 win.
Temple returns to Skip Wilson Field to start a seven-game homestand hosting a three-game series with conference rival La Salle on Friday, April 8 (3:00 p.m.).
