Owls drop just one set in shutout victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple men's tennis team cruised to its fifth-straight win with a 7-0 defeat of visiting Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, April 6. The Owls' players dropped just one set in the shutout Atlantic 10 win at TU Pavilion.
In doubles action, Dmitry Vizhunov and Kacper Rams got things started with an 8-2 decision at the second flight. Filip Rams and Taylor Hairston followed with an 8-4 win at number one to secure the point. Mansur Gishkaev and Andrey Morozov made it a clean sweep with their tough 8-7 (5) win at number three.
The Cherry and White kept rolling in singles play with Stanislav Stekolshikov picking up a 6-2, 6-2 win at number two. Hairston was next with his 6-1, 6-2 win at the fourth flight to make it 3-0, and Filip Rams secured the win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number one.
Temple's biggest challenge came at number three, where it took Vizhunov three sets to defeat Tommy Gates. Vizhunov took the first, 6-4, but Gates responded with a 6-1 win in the second. Vizhunov got the win with a 10-8 super tiebreaker win in the third set to preserve the shutout.
Also winning for the Owls were Kacper Rams at the fifth flight, 6-2, 6-1, and Gishkaev at number six in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Temple remains home to host non-conference foe St. John's on Saturday, April 9, at the TU Pavilion at 1 p.m.
