Men's Crew Places Three Boats in Grand Finals of Knecht Cup

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ - Temple men's crew had a strong day on the Cooper River, easily qualifying three of its four boats to the grand finals, Saturday at the 2011 Knecht Cup. The Owls' Varsity 8 and 2nd Varisty 8 each recorded the fastest times of the day with the Lightweight 4 winning its only race with the second fastest time among the competing crews.
The Varsity 8 won its morning heat, posting a time of 6:18.47 to best second-place Rutgers (6:21.68) by nearly three seconds. The Owls' top boat then rowed the best time of the day (5:56.41), to defeat second-place Marist (5:58.00). Also qualifying for Sunday's grand final were Delaware, Trinity, Drexel and Grand Valley.
The 2nd Varsity 8 won its only race of the day, defeating second-place Bucknell (6:35.48) with a time of 6:29.40. Also qualifying for the grand final were Bucknell, Trinity, Drexel, Saint Joseph's and Marietta.
Like the 2nd V8, the Lightweight 4 rowed the course in a time of 7:24.13, topping second place Charleston (7:25.59) in its only race. Mercyhurst won its heat with the best time of the day (7:23.54) while Carnegie Mellon took its heat with a time of 7:27.26. The other boats qualifying for the grand final were Charleston, Fordham and Pittsburgh.
The Owls' Varsity four placed second in their heat with a 7:39.59 to qualify for the semifinals. Temple then struggled to a fifth place heat in its semi, putting the Owls in Sunday's petite final.
Competition continues Sunday.
