5.1.11 | Baseball

Owls' normally potent offense held to no runs, four hits

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I.
- The Temple baseball team struggled at the plate in the Owls' series finale at Rhode Island, taking a 16-0 loss from the Rams on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.  Temple falls to 21-20 overall, 3-12 in Atlantic 10 play while Rhody improves to 26-17, 12-6 in conference play.

Freshman Matt Hockenberry made it through three innings in the start, being pulled after scattering six hits and striking out three.  Junior Tyler Horst tossed the fourth inning, relieved by redshirt-freshman Ryan Kuehn who let up no runs over 2.0 innings of work.  Freshmen Zach Batchelor and Zach White combined for the final two innings, with White tossing the majority (1.2 IP).

Temple's bats were uncharacteristically quiet today, with only three Owls hitting safely.  Senior Byron McKoy went two-for-four in the contest, leading off the game with a ground rule double.  Seniors Adrian Perez and Ryan Ferguson were each one-for-four with a single.

URI's Stephen Peterson tossed a complete game, showing impressive control allowing one walk, four hits and striking out nine.  His offense posted a run or more over the first four innings to give the Rams a 10-0 lead.  Rhode Island would add four in the seventh and two in the eighth to make the final score 16-0.

The Owls looked for a spark in the top of the sixth, with McKoy and Perez leading off the frame with back-to-back singles.  The runners moved up to second and third after Ferguson grounded out, but would advance no further.  Temple stranded seven base runners on the game.

The Cherry and White returns to action with Tuesday meeting at Rutgers, scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start time in Piscataway, N.J.
