PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Men's Crew will row five boats at the 2011 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta which gets underway May 13 at 7:00 a.m. but all eyes will be on the Owls' Varsity 8 as it looks to win its first gold medal at the prestigious event since 2004.
Seeded fourth, the Owls have a veteran lineup on their top boat comprised of junior James Barr (stroke), junior Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), junior Jason Cartwright (6-seat), junior Brian Reehill (5-seat), sophomore Mike Mirabella (4-seat), senior John Masterson (3-seat), freshman Fergal Barry (2-seat), senior Scott Waters (bow) and junior Donald Norris (cox). This fact gives longtime head coach Dr. Gavin White confidence in his quest for the program's 21st Varsity 8 championship.
"We have real good chemistry with our varsity 8, and that means a lot," White said. "The crew has progressed steadily during the season and is rowing well now. I feel we will be ready for the challenge."
The Varsity 8 will row from lane four in its heat Friday that is scheduled to start at 10:25 a.m.
Juniors John Boehm (stroke) and Alex Klein (bow) will compete in the pair competition, rowing at 9:21 a.m. from lane three.
The Owls Lightweight Varsity 4 boat, comprised of sophomore Richard Ehmer (stroke), senior Nick Contino (3-seat), sophomore Chris Roberts (2-seat),junior Brandon Joyce (bow) and sophomore Nicholas Palastro (cox), will be in lane four for its 3:01 p.m. heat while Temple's Junior Varsity 8 of sophomore Kevin Nally (stroke), junior Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), senior Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), junior Aaron Heyde (5-seat), sophomore Maciej Grudzien (4-seat), freshman Piotr Grudzien (3-seat), junior Diordje Vilimanovic (2-seat), junior Mike VanAssche (bow) and sophomore Matthew Sbei (cox) will row from lane three at 4:53 p.m.
Junior Petar Ivacic will be one of 21 rowers competing in the men's collegiate single race. He will row in his heat that commence at 11:34 a.m. from lane one.
Saturday's semifinals get underway at 8:00 a.m. Follow owlsports.com for results and start times. The finals on Saturday will be televised live by 6ABC starting at 1:00 p.m. and streamed on espn3.com.
