Men's Crew Wins Three Heats; Advances Five Boats to Semifinals

The Temple men's crew had a banner first day on the Schuylkill Friday, qualifying all five of its boats into the semifinals at the 2011 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. The Owls' Varsity 8, Junior Varsity 8 and Lightweight Varsity 4 all won their heats while the team's pair and single move on with third place finishes.

"We are right where we need to be," Temple head coach Dr. Gavin White said. "We should be right in the thick of things tomorrow."

Looking to win its first gold medal at the prestigious event since 2004, the Varsity 8, comprised of junior James Barr (stroke), junior Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), junior Jason Cartwright (6-seat), junior Brian Reehill (5-seat), sophomore Mike Mirabella (4-seat), senior John Masterson (3-seat), freshman Fergal Barry (2-seat), senior Scott Waters (bow) and junior Donald Norris (cox), defeated second-place Marist by just under three seconds with third-place George Mason 20 seconds off the pace.

The Owls Lightweight Varsity 4 boat, comprised of sophomore Richard Ehmer (stroke), senior Nick Contino (3-seat), sophomore Chris Roberts (2-seat),junior Brandon Joyce (bow) and sophomore Nicholas Palastro (cox), easily won its race, besting second-place Wentworth Tech by 18.4 seconds.

The Junior Varsity 8 of sophomore Kevin Nally (stroke), junior Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), senior Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), junior Aaron Heyde (5-seat), sophomore Maciej Grudzien (4-seat), freshman Piotr Grudzien (3-seat), junior Diordje Vilimanovic (2-seat), junior Mike VanAssche (bow) and sophomore Matthew Sbei (cox) had an impressive race, downing second-place Drexel by nearly seven seconds with Purdue placing third.

Juniors John Boehm (stroke) and Alex Klein (bow) placed third in the pair, just 1.31 seconds behind Georgia Tech with Fairfield winning the heat.

Junior Petar Ivacic placed third in his men's collegiate single heat behind scullers from Mercyhurst and Penn.  Ivacic raced later in the day in his semifinal, placing fifth in that race.

Saturday's semifinals get underway at 8:00 a.m. The morning races will be videostreamed on www.dadvail.org with the finals being televised live by 6ABC starting at 1:00 p.m. and streamed on espn3.com.
