PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's crew garnered two medals at the 2011 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River. The Owls' Lightweight Varsity 4 came from behind to win a silver medal
while TU's Junior Varsity 8 won the bronze medal. The program's top boat, the Heavyweight Varsity 8, placed second in the petite final after placing third in a tightly-contested semifinal.
"I am happy for the JV8 and the Lightweight 4," Temple head coach Dr. Gavin White said. "I
have to credit (asst. coach) Brian Perkins for his handling of the Lightweight 4. They rowed
extremely well.
It was an unfortunate showing for the varsity 8 as they just never was able to get started in
their semifinal heat."
The Owls Lightweight Varsity 4 boat, comprised of sophomore Richard Ehmer (stroke), senior
Nick Contino (3-seat), sophomore Chris Roberts (2-seat),junior Brandon Joyce (bow) and
sophomore Nicholas Palastro (cox), won their morning semifinal by three seconds over second place Loyola Marymount. Rowing out of lane four in the final, Temple came from fourth place midway through the race to row through Delaware first and then Chicago down the stretch to take second place by .64 seconds. Cal-Berkeley won the gold.
The Junior Varsity 8 of sophomore Kevin Nally (stroke), junior Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), senior
Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), junior Aaron Heyde (5-seat), sophomore Maciej Grudzien (4-seat),
freshman Piotr Grudzien (3-seat), junior Diordje Vilimanovic (2-seat), junior Mike VanAssche
(bow) and sophomore Matthew Sbei (cox) placed second to Virginia in its morning semi by 1.1 seconds. Virginia would prove to be too strong in the final, defeating Temple by over five seconds with Michigan earning the silver. The Owls took the bronze in open water over fourth place Delaware.
The Varsity 8, comprised of junior James Barr (stroke), junior Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), junior Jason Cartwright (6-seat), junior Brian Reehill (5-seat), sophomore Mike Mirabella (4-seat), senior John Masterson (3-seat), freshman Fergal Barry (2-seat), senior Scott Waters (bow) and junior Donald Norris (cox), struggled in its semifinal, losing out on second place and a spot in the grand final by nearly two seconds to Jacksonville. Williams, seeded third in the event, won the semifinal.
In a petite final that included 2010 champion Brock and perennial powers Purdue and Grand Valley State, the Owls would rebound to place second, 2.43 seconds behind Drexel, who had bested TU two weeks ago at the Bergen Cup. Brock placed third with Grand Valley State placing fourth.
Juniors John Boehm (stroke) and Alex Klein (bow) placed third in the pair semifinal behind Drexel and Rollins.
The Owls' 1986 Dad Vail Champion crew was honored in a ceremony between the semifinals and finals.
Temple is now off until the IRA Regatta held on the Cooper River June 2-4.
