Four other Owls named to All-Big 5 Team
PHILADELPHIA - Temple baseball's redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak and freshman Will Remillard were named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Rookie of the year, respectively, in voting conducted by the city's head coaches and sports information offices. Seniors Adrian Perez, Ryan Ferguson and Byron McKoy, along with Nikorak were named to the All-Big 5 team, with Ferguson being named to the Big 5 Academic team.
Nikorak set a school record with 23 doubles this year, leading the city in that category as well as home runs (11) and RBI (58). Named to the All-Atlantic 10 second team, Nikorak was the team leader in runs scored (56) and ranked second on the team batting .359. The Stroudsburg, Pa., native started all 53 games at third base and, when not commanding the hot corner, made appearances on the mound with four wins and three saves.
Remillard will be a player to watch for over the next three years at Temple, putting together a tremendous collegiate debut. Moving into the starting role at catcher, Remillard hit .321 with 10 doubles three homers and 28 RBI. He was also impressive defensively, throwing out 28 runners on the year.
Temple's all-time leader in hits, McKoy nearly snapped the single-season record for hits in a season with a team-high 84 this year. He ranked third on the team with 18 doubles and first on the squad being a perfect 18-for-18 on stolen base attempts. A native of Charlotte, N.C., McKoy made all 53 starts for the Owls in left field.
Perez posted 29 multi-hit games on the year to rank second on the team with 83 hits. Ranking second on the team with 21 doubles, he was one of five players to start all 53 games this year. The Woodland, Calif., native hit .342 on the year and drove in 50 runs.
Ferguson, who boasts a 3.42 cumulative grade point average as a criminal justice major, has been continually recognized for his achievments both on and off the field in 2011. A CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 first team honoree, the Glen Mills, Pa., native batted .316 with 10 homers and 48 RBI this year. He started out the year with a 26-game hit streak which broke the program record.
