CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Junior Travis Mahoney was named men's Most Outstanding Performer of the Year and freshman Gabe Pickett was named Rookie Performer of the Year as the Temple men's track & field team finished the Atlantic 10 Championships in third place. Senior Emmanual Freeland cruised to a first place finish in the 100m on Sunday afternoon in Charlotte, also posting a second place finish in the 200m dash.
Rhode Island took the title with 179 points, followed by Charlotte with 176.50 and the Owls (131).
Mahoney picked up the men's Most Outstanding Performer of the Year award after a record-setting performance in the 3000m steeplechase and a first place finish in the 1500m run. He is the first Owl ever to earn the accolade. Pickett, who won the triple jump with a mark of 48-08.75, is the first TU athlete to be named Rookie of the Year since Robert Leite-Young in 2001.
Freeland busted down the track in a time of 10.69 to take top honors in the 100m dash, posting a time of 21.12 to take second in the 200m.
Freshman Alex McGee and junior Alan Harding placed fifth and sixth in the 400m dash, running times of 48.42 and 48.71, respectively. Seniors Lou Parisi and Aaron Taylor turned third and fourth place times in the 800m run, going 1:51.55 and 1:51.66, respectively. Freshman Joshua McFrazier finished the 110m hurdles in a time of 14.72, good enough for fifth place.
The 4x100m relay team placed second to a record-setting performance by Charlotte's squad, with the Owls running 41.06.
