Volleyball Announces 2011 Schedule; Opens With Temple Invitational
7.14.11 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA – First-year head coach Bakeer Ganes has announced the 2011 schedule for Temple volleyball, which has the Owls opening the season at home in their own Temple Invitational. The lineup for the tournament, which runs Aug. 26-27, includes South Carolina, Montana and Stony Brook.
The second weekend of the season has Temple playing in the annual Big 5 Tournament at The Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. After a weekday home match against Rider on Sept. 6, the Owls will play in their final non-conference tournament at Long Island University on Sept. 9-10.
Temple will open the Blackbird Invitational on Sept. 9 against Lehigh, and will face Syracuse out of the Big East on Saturday as well as host school Long Island.
A non-conference match at Delaware on Sept. 13 will help prepare the Owls for Atlantic 10 play. Delaware won the Colonial Athletic Association title a year ago, finishing with an overall record of 26-6. In the final weekend of non-conference play, Temple will head to Pittsburgh for the Pitt Blue and Gold Invitational. After facing the Panthers on Friday, Sept. 16, the Owls will take on Morgan State and New Mexico on Saturday. UNM finished last season with a 20-10 record, and the Lobos are a perennial power in the Mountain West Conference.
The Owls are set to begin conference play at Xavier on Sept. 23. Temple will play seven conference matches on the road and eight at home in 2011.
“Our non-conference schedule is really competitive,” said Ganes, “with teams from the SEC, Big East, and the winner of the CAA. Hopefully that competition will prepare us for A-10 play. It's good for us that we have more than 50 percent of our conference matches at home, especially with the young team we have.
“Overall, I'm very excited about the schedule. It will be challenging, but that's what we want at this stage of our development.”
The Atlantic 10 Tournament will be held at Dayton from Nov. 18-20. After missing out on a berth last season, Temple will be looking to get back in the mix which includes six of the 10 conference teams.
