AMBLER, Pa.—
Trailing by a goal just seven minutes into Friday's contest with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County at the Ambler Sports Complex, Temple women's soccer found a way to battle back and take a 2-1 victory over the Retrievers.  The Owls and Retrievers needed more time to decide a victor, but junior Casey Greco nabbed the team's second win of the season in double overtime. With the win, the Owls improve to 2-0-0 and are now off to their best start to a season since 1992.

UMBC controlled the game in the opening minutes of the match, which led to Amy Savage's unassisted goal inside the seventh minute.

Savage's 15-yarder went above redshirt junior goalkeeper Tara Murphy for the Retriever's early advantage. From that point on, Murphy stopped everything else that came her way, finishing the game with four saves.

After the goal, the Owls noticeably tightened up on their defense. The Retrievers who had six shot in the first half, were held to just two for the rest of the game.

While the defense came up strong, the offense picked up its pace as well.

Freshman Alyssa Kirk landed a corner in front of the UMBC net, where junior Kate Yurkovic scrambled to feed classmate Morgyn Siegfried the ball for the equalizer.

A deadlocked 1-1 game sparked the offensive momentum for the Owls.

Senior Niki Conn put up several scoring chances, as she finished the game with seven shots. With just under six minutes remaining in regulation, Conn had an open break and launched a shot from 40 yards out, nailing the post and just missing the go-ahead goal.

In overtime the Owls continued to put pressure on the Retrievers defense, striking for two shots in the first extra session. Both defenses stood strong, causing the teams to need a second overtime period.

The Owls needed just one offensive chance in the second d overtime to end the game. Conn fielded a throw in from midfield to find Greco going up the middle and one-on-one with a UMBC defender. Greco struck a shot on the left side of the net from 30 yards out to nab the win for the Owls.

With Sunday's game against Marist postponed due to Hurricane Irene in the forecast, Temple now gears up for five straight games on the road. The Owls will get the lengthy road swing underway when they visit city-rival Drexel on Friday, Sept. 2 for a 4:00 p.m. match.
