PHILADELPHIA – A four-game road swing on the slate has passed for the Temple Owls, turning them toward Friday's date with the Long Island Blackbirds in the opening day of the Temple/Penn Tournament. Friday's match will be the first-ever collegiate match played at the Dunning-Cohen Champions' Field when the two teams square off at Noon. Live Stats will be provided here, pending on game-time weather conditions.
Along with Temple, Penn and Long Island, Stony Brook will also be participating in the weekend tournament.
The Owls are hosting their first game since Sept. 3 when it opened the season with a narrow, 1-0, victory over Lafayette. Since then, the Owls have split match decisions, going 2-2-0.
Most recently, the Owls dropped Sunday's contest to Stetson, 1-0, on the last day of the Stetson Soccer Classic. Prior to the defeat, Temple held-off a pesky Jacksonville Dolphins' squad in the final moments with a 3-2 wins last Friday evening.
Earlier this week, junior Matt MacWilliams was tabbed with Philadelphia Soccer Six honorable mention after having the game-winning goal, along with an assist against Jacksonville. MacWilliams was also named to the Stetson Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team.
Junior Cody Calafiore has been sidelined for the last two games. Against Brown (Sept. 11), he suffered an ankle injury. Calafiore continues to be evaluated. The timetable for his return has been set for 1-2 weeks.
About Long Island: The Blackbirds come into this weekend nearing the end of an eight-match road swing to open the season, which will conclude Sunday at Penn. Long Island is looking to win its first match since defeating Rider on Sept. 9.
Junior Elliot Kane and senior Steve Jakubowski have provided the bulk of the Blackbirds' offense so far this season, combining for seven of the team's 10 points.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Jansen has been difficult to beat this season. In five games in between the posts, he has posted two shutouts and owns a 0.90 goals against average and a .884 save percentage.
Temple and Long Island last met in 2005, when the Blackbirds won by a count of 3-0. All-time, these two teams have squared off against one another just twice, with each team having victory in the series. The Owls won the first meeting between the schools back in 2001.
