Fencing Takes Part in USFA North American Cup

Five Owls had Top 32 finishes this weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. –It had been more than a month since the last time they competed, but Temple Women's Fencing was back in action this weekend out in Portland, Oregon for the USFA North American Cup.  The tournament is one of the nation's strongest, as it features each squad's top senior and Under 20 fencers. The senior event in each weapon is one of several Olympic Trials being held this year.

As for the Owls' performance through the first three days, they had five Top 32 finishes this weekend.  [Complete results are listed below]

In foil, sophomore Epiphany Georges went 3-3 in pool play, advancing to the direct elimination round where she was 2-1, losing to the eventual gold medalist Lee Kiefer. 

Georges had an even stronger outing in junior women's foil, as she went undefeated in pools with a 6-0 record before going 1-1 in direct elimination, losing to finalist Jessie Laffey. 

In sabre, freshman Lauren Rangel-Friedman was 5-1 in pool play and 1-1 in direct elimination before losing to the tournament gold medalist Skyla Powers. 

Sophomore Andrea Haley had a very solid weekend of competition, as she went 2-3 in her sabre pool and 1-1 in direct elimination. 

In senior women's sabre, team captain Kamali Thompson went 4-1 in pool play and 1-1 in direct elimination, before falling to finalist Allison Lee.

The tournament will conclude Monday with the Under 20 Women's Epee event.

The main portion of Temple's 2012 season is officially underway.

From here, the Owls will pick up next week in Hutchinson Gym at the University of Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia Invitational, which is slated for a 9:00 a.m. start.
