Mahoney Lands Top Finish; Owls Compete at Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md.— Temple put up a battle against a field of improved squads in Rutgers, Navy and Rhode Island at the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday. The Owls put up a fourth-place score of 112 thorugh the day's events.
The Scarlet Knights took the top spot in the meet, totaling 183 points, which was ahead of host Navy (158) and Rhode Island (140).
Junior Travis Mahoney set himself apart as Temple's main highlight of the afternoon. With a finish time of 2:29.05, in the 1,000 meter run, Mahoney placed first overall in the event.
Damian Myers was Temple's top-finisher in his heat of the 200 meter dash, placing ahead of Navy's Jalen Elrod and Stuart Shrum with his time of 23:08, to take 11th place overall.
When the event moved to the 60 meter hurdles, sophomore Josh McFrazier seemed to have picked up from his success at his most recent races. In Saturday's meet, McFrazier placed second with a time of 8.24—only 0.03 off from Rhode Island's top performer
In field events, senior Tim Malloy landed 1.99 meters in the high jump to claim the runner-up position behind on Rutgers' Adam Bergo.
Sophomore Gabe Pickett had a solid landing in his event. In the triple jump, Pickett placed third in the event with his distance of 14.63 meters. In the same event, Derek Holland and Tim Malloy placed in the order of fifth and sixth with respectable scores of 14.35 meters and 14.20 meters, respectively.
On Friday, the Owls will head to State College, Pa. to begin the Penn State National Open, where they will look to rebound from their latest performance.
