PHILADELPHIA – With career performances by Joelle Connelly and Victoria Macaulay, the Temple women's basketball team cruised to a 72-47 win against Penn at home on Saturday afternoon in McGonigle Hall. Macaulay scored a career-high 20 points to lead all players, while Connelly had the best game of her Temple career with 16 points.
The Owls now stand at 10-8 overall and 1-1 in the Big 5. Penn drops to 7-8 overall and is finished with the city series after going 0-4.
Four players scored in double figures for Temple for the first time this season. Shey Peddy had a solid game with 15 points and a game-high six steals, while Kristen McCarthy added 10 points. Macaulay was not only the points leader in the game but the rebounding leader as well, grabbing eight boards.
Jackie Kates led Penn with 17 points off the bench, and Kristen Kody scored 12 points off the bench for the Quakers.
After a slow start that saw the Owls not hit a field goal for more than three minutes to start the game, they picked up the pace to take a 7-2 lead. Penn came back to tie the score twice at 9-9 and 11-11, but Temple then used a 10-0 run to lead 21-11 just after the midway point of the half.
While the Quakers never again tied the score, they stayed within easy striking distance thanks to 45.8 percent shooting from the field in the first half, including going 4-of-11 from three-point range. Penn's Kody was a perfect 4-of-4 including two treys, and already had a career-high 11 points at halftime.
For the Owls, Connelly had the best game of her Temple career in the first half alone, scoring 14 points including 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Although they only shot 33.3 percent from the field in the half, the Owls hit 12-of-14 at the stripe to keep the lead.
Penn came as close as two points, 29-27 with 3:05 remaining, but the Owls closed the half on a 6-0 run to lead 35-27 at the break. Macaulay, who hit 2-of-2 at the line in the final second of the half, had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting to stand only two off her career-high.
The Owls kept at least a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half. They scored the first four points after the break to lead by 14, and Macaulay reached her career high a few minutes later. Temple led by 17, 52-35 after back-to-back jumpers by McCarthy with 13 minutes remaining.
Connelly hit another two at the line near the midway point of the second half to give Temple its first 20-point lead at 58-38. The Owls' largest lead down the stretch would be 25 with nine minutes remaining.
Temple recorded a season-high 20 assists and tied its season-low with 10 turnovers. The Owls' 15 steals also tied their season high.
The Owls will be on the road for their next game, a 7:00 p.m. contest at Xavier on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
