Forthun placed 8th in the heptathlon
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Going against a field of high calibar squads from all across the nation at the Penn State National Open, the Temple men's track team brought it on the opening night at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
In the distance medley relay, the Owls' squad, which was comprised of senior Travis Mahoney, junior Damian Myers, sophomore Will Kellar and freshman Cullen Davis, took the top spot in the event. Temple finished the race in 10:01.84, setting an IC4A qualifying mark, to just beat out Atlantic 10 and city-rival Saint Joseph's (10:02.19).
Freshman Derek Forthun represented the Owls in the heptathlon, where he took eighth place overall through the four events. Forthun, a native of Monmouth Junction, N.J., had his best finish in the shot put where he placed second with a distance of 11.41 meters, placing only behind Central Michigan's Josh Kettlewell (13.44 meters). Forthun claimed a fifth place in his section of the 60 meter dash, before also reaching a distance of 1.87 meters in the high jump for another fifth place finish. In the long jump, the first-year multis competitor placed eighth with a distance of 6.07 meters.
Continuing his impressive start to the season, sophomore hurdler Josh McFrazier set another IC4A qualifying mark and set another personal best with his time of 8.11 in the 60 meter hurdle.
In the long jump, junior Dylan Pensyl reached 6.82 meters in the event to finish just .03 off from tying his personal best, which was previously set back on Jan. 16, 2011 at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory.
"We're progressing in the right direction," head coach Eric Mobley said. "Everyone is giving all that they've got and it's showing in our success. We're seeing several runners reach new personal records each week, so if this keeps up, we're only going to get better. We held our own today against some very talented and high calibar running schools today, so we look forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
Temple will continue the Penn State National Open on Saturday. The day opens at noon with the women's high jump and culminates with the men's 4x400 meter relay at 6:00 p.m. To follow the day's events, click here.
