RICHMOND, Va. – Kristen McCarthy hit a jumper with 0.2 seconds on the clock to give Temple women's basketball a 56-55 win in the Atlantic 10 opener at Richmond (12-3, 0-1) on Saturday night. The Owls (7-7, 1-0) had trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, and used a 13-0 run in the second-half to get back in the game.
McCarthy finished with her third double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 18 points along with grabbing 11 rebounds. Shey Peddy and Brittany Lewis scored 12 points apiece, and Victoria Macaulay led all players with a career-high 13 rebounds.
Abby Oliver led the Spiders with a game-high 21 points, while Rachel Bilney added 13 points.
McCarthy drained a trey for the game's first bucket, but by the time Temple scored again the Spiders had raced out to a 10-3 lead. The Owls went on to shoot just 24 percent from the field in the half and also made just 4-of-9 at the free throw line.
Temple's largest deficit was 14 points, 26-12 with 5:42 remaining in the half. Peddy then converted an old-fashioned three-point play followed by two more free throws, and Victoria Macaulay hit a layup in the final minute to complete a 7-2 run for the Owls. Temple trailed by eight heading into the break, 30-22.
The Owls out-rebounded Richmond 26-21 in the first half which included nine of Macaulay's rebounds in the game.
Five minutes into the second half the Spiders led by 12, 40-28, but it would be over five minutes until Richmond scored again.
The Owls exploded for a 13-0 run featuring three buckets from Lewis including a trey, and just past the midway point of the half they took a 41-40 lead.
The Spiders got back into the game with a 15-6 run to regain an eight-point lead, 55-47 with four minutes remaining before Temple made its final push.
Rateska Brown sank a three-pointer followed by back-to-back jumpers from McCarthy, putting Temple within a point at 55-54 and 1:23 on the clock. Neither team scored for the next three possessions and the Owls called a timeout with 10 seconds left.
Richmond had two fouls to give up before putting Temple in the 1-and-1, which it used, to leave the Owls with 5.6 seconds to score. After McCarthy hit the jumper on an assist from Peddy, the Spiders made a futile attempt to get a clean shot off in the last 0.2 seconds.
Up next for Temple is a home game against St. Bonaventure at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11 in the Liacouras Center.
