FAIRFAX, Va. – Temple men's track and field was back in action for the first time in 2012 and for the first time in nearly a month, as it went to George Mason University to compete in the Father Diamond Meet.
On the track, Josh McFraizer and Travis Mahoney were the two standouts for the Owls on Saturday, as each earned IC4A qualifying marks in the events they participated. McFraizer finished the 60 meter hurdle in 8.16 while Mahoney took second place in the one-mile run in a time of 4:14.14.
In the 1000 meter run, Cullen Davis took a solid fourth place finish with a time of 2:31.44, which was just under three seconds of three Georgetown runners that placed ahead of him.
Philip Fanz was a fifth place runner in the 3000 meter run, with his time of 8:51.17. In the same event, Ben Thomas placed within the top 10, finishing in the eighth spot after crossing the line in 8:57.22. Freshman Matthew Kacyon placed 12th in the event with a time of 9:02.71.
Later in the day, Alex McGee, Damian Myers, Alan Harding and Lionel Wilson teamed up to form the 'A' squad for the Owls in the 4x400 meter relay. In that event the comprised group took fifth place, finishing only behind George Mason, Virginia State, Hampton and St. Augustine's. The Owls finished in 3:23.17, which was roughly seven seconds behind top-finisher St. Augustine's.
“Overall this was a good day and a strong meet for us,” head coach Eric Mobley said. “When you look at our results from today and compare them to the ones from last season at this time, it's clear how much better we are right now. It's great to get the season off with a good day like this. The intensity from our team was there and we look forward to increasing that as we move on.”
Temple's season now moves at a more consistent pace as the Owls will now head to the 168th Armory in New York on Friday, Jan. 13 for the NYC Gotham Cup.
