Batey advances from singles qualifier; both doubles teams win

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Two women's tennis singles players were active in the qualifying round and two doubles teams saw action in the main draw of the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional bracket on Friday afternoon. The event is being held at Virginia Tech on October 19-23.
In qualifying action, Jordan Batey was successful in advancing to the main draw with a 2-0 day. The junior, seeded seventh, defeated Sarah Henderson of Penn State, 6-1, 6-2, before getting past Kristina Eisenbrand of Saint Joseph's 6-7(4), 6-2, 5-1 (ret.). Batey will take on Liberty's Brittany Yang 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the main draw round of 64.
Maame Ama Osei was also active in qualifying, dropping a 6-4, 6-3, match to Nicola Wellman of Liberty in the opening round.
Joining Batey in the singles main draw on Saturday will be Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina. Doms takes on Carol Kahoun of Virginia Tech at 11 a.m., while Mavrina gets play started with a match against Vicky Sekely of Georgetown at 3 p.m.
In doubles play, Batey and Doms teamed up to defeat Navy's duo of Logan Antill and Gabby Winter, 8-4. The pair moves on to play the top-seeded team of Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting of Penn State at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Mavrina and Osei were also successful with an 8-1 win against Virginia Tech's Conley and Ramthun in the round of 64. They will square off against Georgetown's Kelly Comolli and Sekely at 10 a.m. Saturday.
