Team captains Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina lead squad in final year in Atlantic 10
PHILADELPHIA – The 2013 version of the Temple women's tennis team will take the court for the first time this spring with its participation at the VCU 4 + 1 Invitational. The Owls will face Campbell in their first match at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, before squaring off with the host team, #46 Virginia Commonwealth University at 3 p.m. The team wraps up play at the event with an 11 a.m. match on Sunday against Morgan State.
The Cherry and White face a tough road in the early part of the season, taking on nationally ranked opponents in three of their first five matches. In addition to 46th-ranked VCU, TU will travel to #50 Penn State on January 26 and then to #71 Princeton on January 30.
Hopefully the strong early-season schedule will help prepare the squad for its last go at an Atlantic 10 title before leaving for the BIG EAST Conference in the 2013-14 season. The Owls get into league play early, taking on defending A-10 champion Richmond, at Penn, in February. The team has a challenging draw of league play, facing seven of its eight conference opponents on the road. The only home league match is with cross-city rival Saint Joseph's late in the season in April.
Temple's other home matches this season are against Georgetown, Drexel, California (Pa.), Villanova, Syracuse and Binghamton.
Juniors Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina serve as captains on the relatively young squad, which features no seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen. Doms, Mavrina and classmate Jordan Batey are all returning all-conference players for the Owls.
Mavrina, who was a first-team all-conference selection a year ago, finished last season with a 23-13 overall singles record that included a 14-7 dual record and a 6-0 mark against Atlantic 10 teams. The sophomore played all of her dual matches at No. 1 and finished the year winning eight of her final 11 matches. In doubles action, Mavrina posted a 15-14 record with her most success at No. 3, going 7-1. She teamed up with Agnese Rozite to go 6-1 at the third flight over the final seven matches of the season.
Doms, an Atlantic 10 Second Team honoree last season, floated between the first, second and third singles flights throughout the year, going 15-16 overall. She saw most of her action at No. 2, however, going 6-6. The lefty went 15-12 in doubles action, pairing up with four different teammates throughout the season, including a 10-5 record in dual matches with Batey.
Batey also reached the 20-win plateau in singles play this year, going 21-13 overall and 15-9 in dual match play with a 6-1 record against league opponents to earn second-team all-conference accolades. It wass the second-straight season Batey surpassed 20 singles wins after going 23-5 as a freshman. In 2012, she played the majority of her singles matches at No. 3, going 8-3. In doubles play, Batey went 12-12 playing the majority of her matches with Doms between the second and third flights.
TU posted a 14-11 record through the regular-season last spring, including a 6-1 record in A-10 play. Temple's only conference loss came in the form of a 4-3 decision against Massachusetts early in the season. The Cherry & White ended the year winning seven of their last nine matches, including three 7-0 decisions and four wins over conference foes.
