A-10 All-Conference Volleyball Release
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Volleyball senior Chelsea Tupuola has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Libero of the Year, as announced by the league office on Thursday. Teammate and junior Gabriella Matautia, a right side hitter, was named to the A-10 First Team. The Owls are just one day away from facing Duquesne in the A-10 Tournament quarterfinals, with that match set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16.
With 1,385 digs in her career heading into weekend, Tupuola ranks seventh all-time at Temple. Her 5.30 digs per set this season lead all players in the Atlantic 10 and rank 34th among all players in NCAA Division I. She was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season, and was the MVP of both the 2012 Big 5 Tournament and the 2012 Temple Invitational. Along with her Libero of the Year honors, Tupuola was named to the A-10 Second Team.
Matautia ranks second in the A-10 and 51st in the nation with 4.05 kills per set. She also leads the conference and ranks 35th in the nation with 0.39 service aces per set (39 total). Matautia did not capture any awards as the season progressed, but quietly established herself as one of the best players in the league. With 841 kills and her junior season not even over, Matautia will undoubtedly leave her mark in the Temple record books before her career is over.
Dayton senior outside hitter Rachel Krabacher was named the A-10 Player of the Year while her teammate, senior Samantha Selsky, was named Setter of the Year. Dayton Coach Kelly Sheffield was named Coach of the Year. All three award winners are repeats, as each won their respective awards in 2011 as well. Martina Samadan of VCU took home Rookie of the Year honors.
