PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Temple junior Gabriella Matautia was one of seven student-athletes named to the 2012 Atlantic 10 Volleyball All-Championship Team at the conclusion of this year's tournament. Matautia, a 2012 A-10 First Team selection, helped the Owls hand higher-seeded Duquesne its only home loss of the season in the A-10 Quarterfinals, and also had a strong showing against #12 Dayton in the semifinals.
Matautia recorded a double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs in the win against Duquesne, also serving up two aces and recording two blocks. The following day, she led the Owls with 15 kills against top-seeded Dayton, the eventual conference champs.
With 437 kills this season (4.05 kills/set), Matautia was instrumental in leading Temple to its best season in years. The Owls finished at 19-11 overall, and their 8-6 league record gave them a fifth-place finish after being predicted to finish 11th in the preseason poll. Matautia led the team and all players in the conference with 41 service aces (0.38 aces/set), and ranked second on the team with 3.09 digs/set (334 total).
Matautia recorded 14 double-doubles, and had a career performance in early November with 32 kills and 21 digs in a win at Saint Louis.
Of the six teams to earn berths in the A-10 Tournament, only three were represented on the All-Championship Team. Matautia was the only athlete not from Dayton (champ) or Xavier (runner-up) to be honored.
