Fencing Opens Season In Convincing Fashion, Going 4-0 At Vassar
12.2.12 | Women's Fencing
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Temple Women's Fencing officially opened the 2012-13 season on Saturday at Vassar, where it put on a dominating performance, as the team finished with an undefeated record of 4-0. The Owls were led by junior Epiphany Georges, who finished 8-1 in foil, senior Jill Bratton with 9-2 record in epee and sophomore Tiki Kastor 6-1 in sabre.
The day began with a meet against NYU, where the Owls were anxious to start the season. As the meet went along and the fencers shook of their nerves, they rallied to a 20-7 victory, going 8-1 in foil and 6-3 in both epee and sabre.
Later in the afternoon, Temple fenced against multi-meet host Vassar and won 22-5, with a perfect 9-0 performance by the sabre squad.
Using the momentum from the previous round, the Owls went on to sweep Sacred Heart, dropping only two bouts the whole meet.
Against Sacred Heart, the foil squad was once again flawless, helping it to another perfect 9-0 score. Epee and sabre were nearly just as dominant, as they chipped in with like scores of 8-1.
The last meet of the day was a nail-biter. Temple went up against city-rival Penn, who presented a challenge that the Owls would find a way to meet.
Epee got the meet started with a narrow 5-4 loss before sabre evened the meet, by posting a 5-4 win. All that was left to decide the battle was the unbeatable foil squad, Freshman Fatima Largaespada paced the Owls to a 5-4 win in the last bout to bring Temple to a 14-13 meet victory.
"I am pleased with the way we started the season, our fencers were doing their best on off the strip," said head coach Nikki Franke.
