Owls fall in Atlantic 10 match with Minutewomen
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team came up against a tough Atlantic 10 foe in Massachusetts, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Minutewomen on Friday, February 10 at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. TU drops to 0-3 on the year.
Things started promisingly for the Cherry and White when Rebecca Breland and Agnese Rozite opened the match with an 8-5 win over Jessica Podlofsky and Chanel Glasper at number two doubles. The visiting squad earned the point, however, taking the other two doubles bouts.
In singles play, Yana Mavrina put Temple on the board with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1 win over Yuliana Motyl. Paola Calderon followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Julia Comas to make it a 2-1 TU lead. UMass quickly took the lead again with wins at numbers six and two, before Rozite knotted it up with her 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Podlofsky at No. 4.
The match came down to the bout between Maame Ama Osei and Chantal Swiszcz at number five. Osei took the first set, 6-4, but Swiszcz powered through for the win with 6-1 and 6-2 wins in the second and third sets.
TU is back in action tomorrow evening with a 5 p.m. match against Duquesne.
