Owls wins doubles point but drop four of six singles matches

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple men's tennis team hosted Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne on Friday, February 17, at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The Owls dropped a 4-3 decision to the Dukes in a match that came down to the second singles flight.
TU took the early 1-0 lead with wins at the first and second doubles flights. Filip Rams and Kristian Marquart teamed up for the first time this season to defeat Aram Abgaryan and Mehdi Mekaoui at number one, 8-3. After Duquesne won at number three, Kacper Rams and Dmitry Vizhunov secured the point with an 8-5 decision over Pete Carpenter and Max Rubin at the second flight.
Filip Rams added to Temple's lead with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 1 singles against Abgaryan. The Dukes knotted the match at 2-2 with consecutive wins at the fourth and third flights, before Stanislav Stekolshikov made it 3-2 TU with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Mekaoui at number six.
Duquesne again tied the event at 3-3 with a three-set win at the fifth flight. It came down to number two singles between Kacper Rams and Carpenter. Rams got the early upper hand, claiming the first set 7-6(2). But Carpenter took the last two, 6-2, 6-3, to secure the win for the visiting team.
Temple is 2-2 overall and will play again next Saturday, February 25, when it hosts St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7 p.m. at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
