CHAPEL HILL, N.C.  - 
Going against one of the nation's top programs, Temple Women's Gymnastics was edged 194.425-191.050 by the North Carolina Tar Heels in a dual-meet on Friday evening at Carmichael Stadium. Taking third overall, fifth year competitor Katie Canning led the Owls in all-around with her score of 37.600.

In the vault event, Canning's performance on the apparatus earned her a 9.725 for the third-best score in the event. Senior Kaity Watson put up a very impressive performance in the event as well, posting a score of 9.700. Junior Jasmine Johnson and senior Alexandra Uscatu tied for eighth place on the vault with identical scores of 9.600. Fourth-year all-arounder Corrine Williams also competed in the event, in which her demonstration was worth a score of 9.500.

On bars, sophomore Heather Zaniewski earned a tie for third place with UNC's Emily Cornwell, as the two had matching scores of 9.750. Continuing a strong night, Watson's performance was pleasing enough to yield her to a score of 9.600.

Taking the top score for the Owls on beam was junior Jean Alban with a 9.750 on the apparatus. Alban's score put her in third place among all beam event participants on Friday night. Williams placed just behind Alban, as she tied UNC's Janell Sargent with a fourth place score of 9.725.

In the evening's final event, Williams was the Owls' top-finisher on the mat, as she was given a 9.625 for her exercise on the floor to complete her fourth-place all-around score total of 36.825.

Junior Margaret Walch tied for sixth place with UNC's Taylor Brown with an identical score of 9.625 on the floor. Johnson and Canning tied for eighth, before freshman Stephanie Verry and Watson came in the order of 10th and 11th to round out the night for the Owls.

Temple will have two weeks off before heading to Cornell on March 3rd, where it will take part in a quad-meet with the Big Red, Rutgers and Eastern Michigan.
