Day 1 Results

EVANSTON, Ill. -
No.8 Temple Fencing traveled to Northwestern University, where it upset the No. 4-ranked Northwestern Wildcats for the second time in two weeks.

The day started with a 20-7 victory over Wayne State (MI).  Round two saw a rematch against the hosts.  As in the previous meeting, January 21 at UPenn, the final meet score was 14-13 in favor of the Cherry and White.  The Owls experienced a let-down in the next round against an exceptionally talented No. 6 Ohio State squad, falling 9-18.  Rebounding strongly, Temple faced off against the defending NCAA Champions, No. 3 Notre Dame.

In a tightly contested battle that came down to a final overtime touch with the meet knotted at 13-all, Temple fell just short in their upset bid, losing 13-14.  The final round saw a 26-1 victory over Cal Tech.

The top performer on the day was Jillian Bratton, who went 11-3 in epee against an extremely deep field.  Bratton was joined on the epee squad by Chantal Montrose (9-5), Kimberly Howell (6-5) and Krystal Jones (4-2).

In foil, the load was shared across the squad, with Mikayla Varadi (6-4), Alyssa Lomuscio (6-5), Teagan Kilpatrick (5-4), and Epiphany Georges (4-6) turning in similar results.  Danielle Jones (2-0) contributed in limited action.

Senior Kamali Thompson led all sabre fencers with six wins (against four losses).  Lauren Rangel-Friedman (5-2) and Tiki Kastor (5-5) each recorded five wins, while Emily Dodson (3-0), Andrea Haley (3-2) and Tasia Ford (3-7) each lodged three.

"This is the level of competition that we look forward to every year," said assistant coach Bradley Baker.  "While we would have preferred to come out on top against Notre Dame, our team really showed how well they can compete today.  As coaches, we're excited about the rest of the season and seeing where this team can go, come post-season play in March.  The contributions to our overall success keep coming from a different place each competition, and that speaks to the depth of talent that we have on the team and the hard work being put in by each of our members every day in practice."

The overall team and each squad went 3-2 on the day, with epee being the stand-out against Notre Dame (7-2), but falling to Northwestern (4-5).  The day's results bring the Owls' record on the season to 15-4.  Temple remains at Northwestern for five more meets on Sunday.
