Owls beat Colonials for first time since 2006

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
The Temple men's tennis team made a statement to other Atlantic 10 teams this morning, handing the defending conference champion and 2012 preseason favorite George Washington a 4-2 defeat at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center on February 5, 2012. The Owls improve to 2-0 while GW falls to 2-4.

The coaches decided before the match to begin with singles play instead of the traditional doubles matches. That would be all the Cherry and White would need, getting to four points with the final of the six bouts.

Dmitry Vizhunov got TU on the board with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1 win over Alexander van Gils at number three. Newcomer Kristian Marquart followed that with his 6-2, 6-1 victory against Ulrik Thomsen at the fourth flight.

Filip Rams made it 3-0 with an impressive win over Francisco Dias, ranked 12th in the most recent ITA Atlantic Region rankings and the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week. The elder Rams defeated the freshman in two sets, 7-5, 6-3.

The Colonials kept it interesting, earning wins at the fifth and sixth flights to make is a 3-2 match. Kacper Rams, the younger brother of Filip, ended the brief George Washington run with an exciting 7-6(5), 7-6(5) win over Ugur Atalay at number two, giving TU the 4-2 win and making doubles unnecessary.

“This was a great win for our team,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “George Washington is certainly one of our rivals and has a strong team this year. I am really happy to come away with this win.”

The Owls are in action next with a noon match at St. John's on Friday, February 17.
