EVANSTON, Ill. - The second day of the Northwestern Duals started with a 25-2 victory over University of California - San Diego on Sunday. Round two saw a 19-8 result against Stanford. Back-to-back 25-2 wins over Detroit-Mercy and Lawrence followed. The day concluded with a narrow 13-14 loss to No. 3 Princeton, led by an impressive 8-1 result turned in by the foil squad.
“This weekend showed us that we are competitive with any team out there," head coach Nikki Franke said. "Wins over No. 4 Northwestern as well as 13-14 losses to the defending national champions, No. 3 Notre Dame, as well as the #2 Princeton has made the team realize their ability to beat anyone. We will have additional opportunities to fence other Top 10 teams this season and must make the most of it. We must continue to improve and believe in our own capabilities.”
The foil squad proved dominant all day, compiling a 41-4 record, including two 9-0 shutouts (vs. UCSD and Detroit-Mercy). Two foilists, Alyssa Lomuscio (11-0) and Mikayla Varadi (10-0) went undefeated, each including a 3-0 result against Princeton. Joining them on the foil squad were Epiphany Georges (10-2), Teagan Kilpatrick (5-1) and Danielle Jones (5-1).
Sabre saw two more Owls go undefeated in Emily Dodson (10-0) and Lauren Rangel-Friedman (5-0). Kamali Thompson went 7-1 in the weapon, while Tasia Ford finished at 6-3. Rounding out the squad were Andrea Haley (5-2) and Tiki Kastor (3-3). The squad registered shutout wins over UCSD, Detroit-Mercy, and Lawrence.
The epee squad was led by Jillian Bratton (9-2) and Chantal Montrose (9-3). Kimberly Howell (4-4) and Krystal Jones (5-6) contributed key wins as well.
The Cherry and White season record now stands at 19-5, including 3 key wins against other top-10 teams. Competition resumes next Sunday at Duke University, where the Owls face off against North Carolina, Air Force, Brandeis, and the hosts, No. 10 Duke.
