Canning Wins All-Around at Eagle Invite; Owls Earn Fourth Place

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Fifth-year gymnast Katie Canning did it again. At the ninth annual Eagle Invitational at Eastern Michigan University on Saturday evening, the Billerica, Mass native claimed the individual all-around title, making it the fourth time this season that she has taken the top combined score aming four-event competitors at a meet this season. Despite her efforts, the Owls (190.725) suffered defeats to Northern Illinois (192.075), Air Force (192.250) and host EMU (193.850).
First-year assistant coach Kim Parsons continues to have an impact on the Owls' improvement on the balanced beam this season. Once again, Temple showed signs of consistent progression in the event, as the Owls posted the second-highest score in the balance beam event among the four schools with a grand total of 48.725, compliments of impressive performances through the entire lineup.
Canning and senior Corrine Williams also had matching scores in the event, as they tied for second place overall with same earned scores of 9.800.
Williams had a consistent night as she was the team's runner up to Canning on the vault with her score of 9.575. Canning was garnered with a 9.700 in that event, putting her in a tie with three other participants.
Canning led the Owls, just as she did in all four events on the night, with her score of 9.675 on bars, which ranked her ninth overall in the event.
Junior Jean Alban had her best meet of the season and since her return to action.
On the bars, Alban posted Temple's second-best score in the event with a 9.525, which set her in 15th place among all gymnasts that took part in the routine. Freshman Natali Ruzich finished just points off of Alban, as she finished the event with the Owls' third-best score, having a 9.500 for 16th place overall.
Alban went on to be a major contributor to the Owls on this night, as she and sophomore Sylvie Borschel tied for second place on the team and seventh overall on the beam with like scores of 9.800.
Rounding out the scores for Temple, Canning placed fifth overall on the mat with her score of 9.750 in the floor exercise. Junior Margaret Walch provided Temple's second-best demonstration with her routine that earned her a score of 9.625. Alban's strong night got underway with her performance, which was worth a 9.500 for Temple's third-highest score.
Temple will spend the upcoming week preparing for its final regular season meet of the season, which will occur next Sunday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m. when it goes head-to-head with William & Mary.
