Batey wins at No. 4 singles for TU point
RICHMOND, Va. – Jordan Batey continued her solid play, picking up a win at No. 4 singles, but that was the only point the Temple women's tennis team would get in a 6-1 loss at #50 Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday afternoon.
VCU (11-4) swept doubles play, picking up 8-0 shutout wins at the first and second flights. Batey and partner Alicia Doms took the No. 3 VCU tandem of Alena Gerasimova and Salome Kvitashvili took the limit before dropping the match 9-7.
In singles play, the Rams had secured the match by the time Batey broke up the shutout, but not without a thriller at the first flight. Yana Mavrina came back from a 6-4 first set loss to Ana Bara to win the second, 6-1. Bara finally got the best of the sophomore with an 11-9 super tiebreaker. Batey earned TU's point by way of a 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-5 three-set gem over Gerasimova.
The Owls fall to 4-7 on the year and remain on the road to face Delaware at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 12.
