Four Fencers Head To Ohio State For National Championships

3.13.12 | Women's Fencing

Bratton, Lomuscio, Thompson and Varadi will represent Temple

INDIANAPOLIS — On Wednesday, the NCAA Women's Fencing Committee has announced the field of 72 competitors that will participate in the 2012 National Collegiate Women's Fencing Championships. On that list, four fencers from Temple University have been selected, including seniors Alyssa Lomuscio and Kamali Thompson and juniors Jillian Bratton and Mikayla Varadi. Ohio State will host the championships at the French Field House and St. John Arena, March 22-25, in Columbus, Ohio.

The selection marks the third trip to nationals for foilists Lomuscio and Varadi, while Thompson is making her fourth appearance in sabre on the national stage. Bratton will make her debut at the National Championships in epee bouts.

Lomuscio will be looking to defend her second team All-American status, which she earned last year.

Selection is based on a combination of regular season performance (40%) and regional tournament placement (60%).

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the losers being awarded a tie for third place. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off.

An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
