Owls come from behind for victory
NEWARK, Del. – The Temple men's tennis team lost the doubles point and was tied at 3-3 with one singles match remaining before Kacper Rams came through in the clutch with a three-set thriller at No. 1 to clinch a 4-3 win over Delaware at the Delaware Field House Courts on Tuesday afternoon. TU improves to 6-7 overall.
The Bluehens (3-4) took the first and third doubles flights to claim the doubles point. Kristian Marquart and Dmitry Vizhunov salvaged the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2.
The host team took a 2-0 lead after a win at No. 2 singles, but Hernan Vasconez got the Owls on the board with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Evan Andrews at the sixth flight. Stanislav Stekolshikov tied it up at 2-2 when he hung on to defeat Andre Vorobyov 6-2, 7-6(5) at flight three.
Mansur Gishkaev put the Cherry and White ahead 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Ryan Kent at No. 5, before Nolan Gelman tied it up again with a tough three-set win over Marquart, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, at the fourth flight with just one bout remaining.
Rams, playing at No. 1 for just the third time in his career, dropped the first set 3-6 and narrowly came back to win the second, 7-5. The junior finished off the comeback with a decisive 6-1 third set win over Troy Beneck, clinching the victory for TU.
“Today was a good win considering we were playing without two of our starters, Filip Rams and Taylor Hairston,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “We got an especially great performance from Kacper Rams at No. 1 to clinch the victory for us.”
Temple returns home to play host to Fordham in a 10:45 a.m. match against the Atlantic 10 rival tomorrow. The match will be played at TU Pavilion.
