Owls win doubles point and three late singles matches
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – With the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to the fifth flight and Mansur Gishkaev came through in the clutch with a win to give Temple a 4-3 defeat of visiting Fordham on Wednesday afternoon. The match was played at TU Pavilion.
Temple earned the doubles point to open play. The Rams threatened, winning at number two, but Kacper Rams and Taylor Hairston picked up an 8-4 decision at the third flight before Gishkaev and Stanislav Stekolshikov clinched the point with an 8-6 win at No. 1.
A Fordham win at No. 3 knotted it up at 1-1 before Hairston put the host team on top again with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Michael Puntillo at the sixth flight.
The visitors regained the lead with wins at the second and first flights, respectively, to hold a 3-2 advantage with two matches remaining. Kristian Marquart kept TU's hopes alive with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 over J.J. Tauil to tie it up at 3-3.
Things looked bleak when Gishkaev dropped the first set on court five, 0-6, but the senior took the second 6-2 and hung on for a hard-fought 7-6 (3) tiebreaker win in the third for the flight victory over Max Peara, and the match win over Fordham.
“This was another good Atlantic 10 win for us, despite being shorthanded,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “Mansur was particularly impressive with a big win to clinch it for us.”
Temple, 7-7, heads to Richmond for a 1 p.m. match against the A-10 rival on Sunday, March 25.
