Pat Peterson's Near No-Hitter Earns Him Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

The rookie southpaw carried a no-run, no-hit game into the ninth inning of Saturday's start at Saint Louis

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference issued its weekly awards on Monday afternoon. On this week's honor roll, Temple's rookie starting left handed pitcher Patrick Peterson has been tabbed the league's Rookie of the Week. Joining him on this week's awards release are La Salle's Dan Klem and Joe Popielarczyk of Massachusetts, who earned A-10 Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Despite the team suffering a devastating 2-1 walk-off loss in the ninth inning to the Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday, Patrick Peterson had a sensational performance, pitching an absolute gem.

Through the first 6.2 innings, the rookie southpaw held a perfect game before issuing a walk. The first base runner of the game for Saint Louis would not cause Peterson to lose focus, as he went on to set down the next seven batters to carry a no-run, no-hit ballgame into the ninth inning—putting him three outs away from a milestone that hadn't been accomplished by a pitcher in Temple Cherry & White in over 30 years.

The Bear, Delaware native, who threw a perfect game while pitching for his high school team at the Charter School of Wilmington, struck out a career-high 10 batters and looked to hold on to Temple's 1-0 lead while moving closer to his second lifetime no-hitter.

Saint Louis used a pinch hitter to lead off the ninth, which seemed to be its answer to solving Peterson, as he surrendered his first hit of the game—a double—which would nullify the no-no.

In six starts this season, Peterson, 2-1 on the year, leads the team in innings pitched (36.1)  and has had a quality start in all six games--getting the Owls to at least the sixth inning in each start. The rookie lefthander owns a 2.42 era on the year and leads the staff with 40 strikeouts.
