White earns win on the mound and triples to drive in game-winning-run in opener
AMBLER, Pa. – Sophomore pitcher Brooklin White picked up her eighth win of the season, while also tripling to drive in the game-winning run, in a 3-2 game-one victory for Temple softball over visiting Wagner on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls also claimed the nightcap of the doubleheader, 4-0.
The Seahawks got the first run of the game on a Kristen Matteoni solo homerun in the third.
TU got that one back in its half of the frame. With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Meaghan Marley singled up the middle to drive in a run and tie the game 1-1.
The Cherry and White got one more in each of the next two innings to build a 3-1 advantage. The Owls rallied again with two outs in the fourth. Junior Ali Robinson doubled to right center and senior Samantha Schoell followed with a single to left that allowed Robinson to score. In the fifth, it was White's turn to help herself. After Marley drew a one-out walk, White sent a shot to the right centerfield wall to collect her first career triple and score Marley.
Wagner got within one in the top of the sixth when Kelsey Parker hit the team's second solo homer of the day, but Temple held on for the 3-2 win.
White (8-5) scattered six hits over 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking just one. Her Seahawks counterpart, Samantha Bedker (3-8) gave up 10 hits in 6.0 innings, fanning five and walking three.
Schoell finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore Sarah Prezioso went 3-for-4.
The nightcap saw the host team score twice in the third and two more times in the sixth to account for all of the runs in the game. With two outs and two on in the third, sophomore Stephanie Pasquale recorded her team-leading seventh double of the year with a ball hit to left field that drove in both baserunners for the 2-0 lead.
Temple added two more for insurance on a Kayla Cook double in the sixth. Capri Catalano, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, sat the Seahawks down in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.
Catalano (3-5) gave up just three hits in 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking one in picking up her second shutout of the year. Olivia Zwick (2-6) took the loss in 4.0 innings of work, giving up four hits and two runs, striking out five and walking two. Ashley Rollins came on in relief in the fifth, allowing four hits and two runs in 2.0 innings of work.
Cook and Pasquale each ended the game 1-for-3 with two RBI and a double, while senior Rachel Knable was 2-for-3 in the win.
The Owls (14-11) next play host to La Salle for two Atlantic 10 games on March 30 (3 p.m.) and 31 (12 p.m.). The contest on March 31 is a “Pink Out” game, and all fans are encouraged to demonstrate support by wearing pink. The team will be wearing pink belts, socks and jerseys in honor of the event.
