Thompson Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer Of The Year

PHILADELPHIA – Temple senior Kamali Thompson (Teaneck, N.J. /Teaneck) has been named the 2011-12 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large Performer of the Year. In addition, Thompson is one of 11 student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large Team. The team was voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Four different schools were represented on this year's Academic All-Area Women's At-Large Team. Temple led the way with four selections, as Thompson was joined by her fencing teammates Alyssa Lomuscio, Chantal Montrose, and Mikayla Varadi.

Thompson,a Biology major with a 3.42 grade point average became a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier this season and was a second-team All-America selection after finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships during her senior season. At the 2012 NCAA Championships, she defeated three of the top four overall finishers, including 2008 Olympic individual bronze medalist Rebecca Ward of Duke. In addition, Thompson placed ninth in sabre at the 2012 NCAA Regionals, was named 2012 NIWFA first-team in sabre, and won the sabre title for the fourth consecutive year at the NIWFA Championships. Thompson was also selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large Team in 2010-11.

Representing Penn are fencers Amrit Bhinder and Laura Paragano as well as Pia Trikha of the squash team. Three members of the Cheyney bowling team garnered recognition, as Taylor Billington, Danielle Mines, and Janae Silver were all selected. Kiran Vasudevan of the Drexel squash team was the Dragons' lone representative on the team.
