Six-Run Sixth Inning Paces Richmond To 14-6 Defeat Of Owls; Teams To Play Two On Saturday

4.20.12 | Baseball

Rain in Sunday's forecast pushes game into Saturday; Doubleheader begins at 11:30 a.m.

AMBLER – Temple Baseball responded to Richmond's first inning one-run lead, by putting up a three-spot in its half of the frame. The Owls clung to a 5-4 lead going into the sixth, but the Spiders crawled back and took the lead for good, as they exploded for six runs en route to a 14-6 defeat of the Owls at Skip Wilson Field on Friday afternoon.

Saturday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m. due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday.

Despite being named the starter late, senior Dan Moller had a bounce-back performance from his last outing and pitched effective baseball.  Moller's stat line closed with three earned runs on six hits over 4.0 innings, in which he struck out two while walking five.

Moller exited the game in in the middle of the fifth after putting the first two men on base. Temple led 4-3 when freshman Adam Dian took over the mound.
Dian pitched out of the jam, but allowed one of the inherited runners to cross the plate.

Continuing into the sixth, Dian suffered the loss, as he hit Adam McConnell and gave up a double to pitcher Jacob Mayers, who each scored later in the inning, helping Richmond score the first of six runs in the frame.

Redshirt freshman Connor Reilly helped the Owls jump in front in the first inning. With the game tied at one and redshirt senior Steve Nikorak and freshman Nick Lustrino on base, Reilly ripped a single to score both runners.

Reilly finished the fay going 2-for-4 with a team-high three runs batted in.  Freshman Nick Lustrino continues to boost his batting average, as he went 2-for-5 at the plate and scored both times he reached base. His second run came on senior Taylor Juran's double in the third inning.

Nikorak hit his way on base twice, having a 2-for-3 day, as he reached base four times on the day, compliments of being walked twice. The Owls' starter at the hot corner scored two runs, including the one in the fifth that gave the Owls a 4-3 lead when Juran grounded into a fielder's choice.

Returning to the Owls lineup for the first time since April 7, junior Elijah Yarborough scored a run in the seventh.

Redshirt freshman Dan Wasson made his first career appearance late in the game, as he pitched the final two innings. Despite allowing three runs, he fanned away three batters swinging at strikes.

Temple (13=24, 1-9) will close out the weekend series with the Richmond Spiders (19-16, 6-4) Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m. A live video stream will be provided through Owl Access.
