Owls win all six singles in straight sets
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's tennis team hosted Fordham at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center in a Tuesday morning match against the Atlantic 10 rival. The Owls swept the Rams in singles play and took two of three doubles matches to earn the shutout.
The squads started in singles play, and sophomore Yana Mavrina made quick work of her opponent at No. 1, picking up a 6-1 6-0 decision. Junior Agnese Rozite was the next to finish, earning a 6-1 6-1 win over Hanna Fritzinger at No. 5. Senior Paola Calderon made it 3-0 with a 6-2 6-1 victory against Julia Leong at the fourth flight. Freshman Maame Ama Osei secured the match with her 6-3 6-1 decision at No. 6.
Wrapping up the singles scoring for TU were Alicia Doms, with a 6-1 6-4 win at No. 2, and Jordan Batey, a 6-4 6-3 winner at the third flight.
In doubles play, Doms and Rozite teamed up to put the Owls in good shape for the sweep, winning 8-2 at No. 2. Rebecca Breland and Cristina Grimaldi sealed the deal with an 8-4 victory at the first flight.
Temple is 9-9 and 4-1 against A-10 teams. The team travels to Saint Joseph's for a 2 p.m. match against the Hawks on Thursday, April 5.
